L’OCCITANE Group celebrates 50 years of L’Occitane en Provence
From Olivier Baussan’s first distillation of rosemary to a globally recognised brand, the Maison marks 50 years of craftsmanship and creativity, inspired by the lands and traditions of Haute-Provence.
In 1976, a 23-year-old Olivier Baussan distilled rosemary and sold essential oils in the markets of Haute-Provence – a simple gesture and a deep connection to the land. This humble beginning laid the foundation for what would become one of the world’s most recognisable beauty Maisons. Fifty years later, L’Occitane en Provence is celebrating its anniversary, marking half a century of transforming natural ingredients into effective, sensorial and responsible skincare and fragrance collections.
An entrepreneurial story rooted in Haute-Provence
In 1981, the brand opened its first manufacturing site, establishing a Maison for the young business and shaping what would later become L’Occitane en Provence – a brand rooted in delivering sensorial beauty and wellness by combining high-performance natural ingredients with a deep respect for people and the planet.
In the early 1990s, Austrian entrepreneur Reinold Geiger recognised the potential of the Provençal company and joined the adventure, transforming it into a global success. Under his leadership, L’Occitane en Provence expanded internationally while remaining faithful to its founding values. Today, L’Occitane en Provence stands as the heritage Maison of the L’OCCITANE Group, a certified B Corp™, alongside a portfolio of entrepreneurial premium beauty brands.
A global milestone on 1 April
Today, L’Occitane en Provence shares its philosophy across more than 3,000 boutiques, 2,500 partner hotels and over 100 spas worldwide – experienced at its fullest at Le Couvent des Minimes, un Hôtel et Spa L’Occitane en Provence.
The 50th anniversary will be marked worldwide on 1 April, launching a year of celebratory initiatives. Across markets, stores will offer immersive experiences inspired by the origins of L’Occitane en Provence. In Paris, the Marais-based experiential boutique – whose offering evolves with the rhythm of the Maison’s seasons – will host an anniversary installation blending nature-inspired soundscapes with iconic scents such as almond, lavender and verbena. On 10–11 April, a street activation in the Marais will extend the celebration to the wider public.
As another example, in China, celebrations will unfold across key cities including Shanghai and Beijing, with the client experience redesigned around a dedicated anniversary visual identity, weaving together scent, music, light and décor, and enhanced by Provençal-inspired refreshments, personalised gifting and elevated clienteling. L’Occitane en Provence office teams will exceptionally join their Beauty Host colleagues on the store floor to personally welcome guests on this special day.
A year of celebration and creativity
Beyond April, the anniversary year will unfold through a series of moments reflecting the creative spirit and cultural inspiration of L’Occitane en Provence, as the Maison reconnects with its artistic roots – most notably through the inaugural Prix Cultures, created with the Provence Culture network to celebrate emerging talents inspired by Provence. The year will also see the release of a new book written by the brand’s founder, Olivier Baussan, that retraces the poetic and human journey of its early years. The book will be available in selected boutiques around the world.
In May, L’Occitane en Provence’s manufacturing and R&D site in Manosque, France, will unveil a redesigned factory tour and boutique featuring sensory and interactive experiences, inviting visitors to explore the transformation of botanical ingredients into efficacious, sensorial products, while showcasing the Maison’s expertise in sustainable plant extraction, formulation and sourcing.
Through this anniversary, the L’OCCITANE Group celebrates the strength and pioneering spirit of its heritage Maison in natural beauty, while reaffirming its commitment to nurturing entrepreneurial beauty brands rooted in purpose, craftsmanship and sustainability.
